Where the name comes from
Peter is from the Greek Petros, from petra, "rock" or "stone". Jesus gave the name to the apostle Simon at Caesarea Philippi, with a play on words: "Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church".
Peter in the Bible
Peter is one of Jesus's twelve apostles, born Simon, renamed by Jesus. He walked on water, denied Jesus three times, wept bitterly, and became one of the leaders of the church after the resurrection.
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
