Paul is from the Latin Paulus, from paulus, "small" or "humble". It was a Roman family name and became a personal name when the apostle Paul (originally Saul, a Hebrew name) began using it in his ministry to non-Jewish converts.
Paul in the Bible
Paul is the apostle who wrote more of the New Testament than anyone else. He was a persecutor of the church before Jesus met him on the road to Damascus; he became a missionary who planted churches from Antioch to Rome.
