Where the name comes from
James is the English form of the Late Latin Iacomus, which is a form of the Latin Iacobus, from the Greek Iakobos, from the Hebrew Yaakov (Jacob). Its root meaning is "to follow on the heel" - from Jacob grabbing Esau's heel at birth - sometimes read as "supplanter". The name travelled through Latin as Iacomus before reaching English.
James in the Bible
Two of the twelve apostles are named James: James the son of Zebedee (brother of John) and James the son of Alphaeus. A third James, "the brother of the Lord", led the church in Jerusalem and wrote the New Testament letter that bears the name.
