John is from the Latin Iohannes, from the Greek Ioannes, from the Hebrew Yohanan, a joined form of Yahweh and the root chanan, "to be gracious". The old reading is "Yahweh is gracious".
John in the Bible
John the Baptist is Jesus's cousin, the last of the Old-Testament-style prophets, who baptized Jesus in the Jordan. John the apostle, "the disciple whom Jesus loved", wrote the fourth Gospel, the three letters that bear his name, and Revelation. The name is very common in the New Testament.
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
