Where the name comes from
Matthew is the English form of the Greek Matthaios, from the Hebrew Mattityahu, from mattat, "gift", and Yahweh, one of the names of God. It reads plainly as "gift of Yahweh".
Matthew in the Bible
Matthew is one of Jesus's twelve apostles, a tax collector at his own booth when Jesus called him with two words: "Follow me". He got up, left the booth, and wrote the Gospel that bears his name.
And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.
