Luke is the English form of the Greek Loukas, often glossed as "light" or "from Lucania". The light etymology is the one that has stuck in Christian usage.
Luke in the Bible
Luke is a physician, a companion of Paul, and the author of the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. His Gospel is the one that preserved the Christmas story, the parable of the good Samaritan, and the parable of the prodigal son.
