Joy in the Bible is not the same as being cheerful. It is a settled gladness that the world does not give and cannot take. These verses are for a day worth being grateful for, and for a day that does not feel like it.
The verses
Neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.
These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.
