A Prayer for Wisdom (When You Don't Know What to Say)
Wisdom is different from being smart. Smart tells you the answer; wisdom tells you when to speak it, and to whom. This prayer is for the days you need the second one.
The prayer
Lord Jesus,
I have to answer someone today, and I do not know how.
You promised wisdom to any of us who asks, without being made to feel foolish for asking.
Help me tell the truth kindly.
Help me know when to be quiet.
Help me love the person in front of me more than I love winning the point.
Amen.
The verse behind it
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
When to say it
- Before the conversation you have been dreading.
- Before you write the reply you almost sent last night.
- Before you sit with the friend who wants advice you are not sure you have.
