Rachel is Hebrew (Raḥel), from a root meaning "ewe" - a female sheep. The pastoral world of Genesis is where the name is most at home.
Rachel in the Bible
Rachel is the daughter of Laban, the beloved wife of Jacob, and the mother of Joseph and Benjamin. Genesis says Jacob served her father seven years for her, "and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her".
A blessing for Rachel
Rachel, may you know that you are loved the way Jacob loved you: the man kept working and the years felt short. May the God who sees you love you longer than that.
