Where the name comes from
Sarah is Hebrew and means "princess" or "lady", the feminine of sar, "prince, ruler". Before God renamed her she was Sarai, and most scholars say the two forms mean the same thing. The idea that Sarai means "quarrelsome" is an old theory that most scholars no longer accept.
Sarah in the Bible
Sarah was the wife of Abraham and the mother of Isaac, born when she was long past the age of having children. God changed her name from Sarai to Sarah and promised she would be "a mother of nations". When Isaac was born she said, "God hath made me to laugh". The New Testament holds her up as an example of faith.
