Where the name comes from
Miriam is Hebrew (Miryam), whose origin is contested. Three readings are common: "beloved" (from an Egyptian root mry); "bitter" (from mar); and "rebellious" (from marah). Behind the Name treats the first two as the most likely. No one meaning is proven; the Bible does not gloss the name.
Miriam in the Bible
Miriam is Moses's older sister. She watched over him in the basket in the Nile as an Egyptian princess drew him out. She led the women of Israel in a song of praise after the crossing of the Red Sea. She is the prophetess of Exodus 15.
A blessing for Miriam
Miriam, may you have your namesake's watchfulness: the sister who kept an eye on the one who could not yet keep an eye on himself. May you sing the song when the sea closes behind.
