Where the name comes from
Joseph is Hebrew (Yosef), from yasaf, "to add" or "to increase". Genesis 30 explains the name itself: Rachel said "God will add to me another son", and called him Joseph.
Joseph in the Bible
Joseph is Jacob's favourite son, sold into Egypt by his brothers, who rises to save both Egypt and his family from famine. In the New Testament, Joseph is the earthly father of Jesus, who raised him without being his by blood.
And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son.
A blessing for Joseph
Joseph, may God add to you what you cannot add to yourself: patience through the years no one believes you, favour in a room where nobody knows your name, and a heart to forgive the ones who wronged you.
