Biblical Meaning of the Name Esther: Star (or Hidden)

Where the name comes from
Esther is likely from the Persian word for "star" (setareh) or from the goddess Ishtar; some Hebrew tradition connects it also with the root for "hidden", because she hid her people until the moment she stood up for them. Her Hebrew name is Hadassah, "myrtle".
Esther in the Bible
Esther is a Jewish orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai in Persia. She becomes queen, and when a decree threatens to kill her people, she risks her life to plead for them. The book named for her is one of two in the Bible with a woman's name on the cover.
