Where the name comes from
Anna is the Greek form of the Hebrew Ḥannah, from chanan, "to be gracious". It reads as "grace" or "favor". The Latin New Testament transliterated the name as Anna, and the form has crossed most Christian languages unchanged.
Anna in the Bible
Anna the prophetess is named in Luke 2. She was a widow of great age who served in the temple; she came into the temple the day Simeon met the infant Jesus, and she "spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem".
