Happy Birthday in Heaven: Words and a Prayer for Their Day

The first birthday after someone dies arrives like any other date on the calendar, and then it doesn't. Their number is still in your phone. You catch yourself wondering what to get them. For many people it is one of the hardest days of the year, sometimes harder than the anniversary of the death, because it was always a happy day.
There is no right way to spend it. Some people want company; others want the day to pass quietly. Below are words you can use, a short prayer, and simple ways to mark the day.
Short birthday messages for someone in heaven
Write one in a card, under a photo, or say it out loud at the grave. Change any word so it sounds like you.
- For a mom: "Happy birthday, Mom. I still reach for the phone to call you on this day. Thank you for every birthday you made special for me. I'm still cooking your recipes and keeping the door open the way you taught me."
- For a dad: "Happy birthday, Dad. I hear your laugh every time someone tells a terrible joke. I miss you every day, and today a little more. Rest well until we see you again."
- For a grandma or grandpa: "Happy birthday, Grandma. Your kitchen, your hymns, your hands folded to pray: we carry all of it with us. We love you and we miss you."
- For a husband or wife: "Happy birthday, my love. I set out your cup this morning out of habit. Thank you for the life we built. I'm holding on to it until I can hold you again."
- For a son or daughter: "Happy birthday, my sweet boy. You will always be my child, and today I say your name out loud. I love you. Jesus is holding you until I can."
A prayer for their birthday
Lord Jesus, today is ______'s birthday.
Thank you for the day they were born, and for every year we had with them.
We miss them. Hold them close to you, and hold us close too,
because the ones left behind feel this day the most.
Help us remember with gratitude, and not only with sadness.
Amen.
Simple ways to mark the day
- Cook their favorite meal, or bake the cake they always asked for.
- Go somewhere they loved, not only the cemetery: a park, the beach, the diner where they always ordered the same thing.
- Give something in their name: a gift to their church or to a cause they cared about, or a meal for someone who needs one.
- Write them a letter. Keep it in a box for letters like it; a child can draw a picture instead.
- Light a candle at the table and let it burn through the meal.
A verse to read on the day
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
If the day hits harder than you expected
Birthdays and anniversaries can bring grief back with surprising force, even years later. That is normal, and it is not a sign that you are doing something wrong. If the sadness feels too heavy, tell someone you trust, or talk with your doctor or your pastor. In the United States you can also call or text 988 at any hour to talk with someone.
A film for their birthday

If you would like to hear Jesus say their name, our Reunited film speaks of them by name and ends on their photo, framed beneath the first star. You can also send a prayer in their memory, see all our memorial gifts, or, for the holidays, read First Christmas in Heaven.
