Meaning of the Name Sophia: Wisdom

Where the name comes from
Sophia is the Greek word sophia, "wisdom". It was not used as a personal name until the early Christian era; before that, it stood for the wisdom itself, and by the late empire it was personified as a female figure and named as a saint.
Sophia in the Bible
No woman named Sophia appears in the Bible. Wisdom itself, though, is one of the Bible's great subjects. Proverbs 8 gives it a voice - a woman who calls in the street. James 1 says wisdom is asked for and given. Christians read those passages, and later name their daughters for what the Bible loves.
A blessing for Sophia
Sophia, may you be wise the way Scripture calls wisdom: pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be intreated. May God give you understanding and the humility to ask for more.
