Where the name comes from
Mia is a short form of Maria in Italian, Spanish, Scandinavian and Slavic languages. Maria comes from Miriam (Hebrew Miryam), whose meaning is uncertain: the two most common readings are "beloved" (from an Egyptian root) and "bitter" (from mar). In Italian, "mia" also happens to mean "mine" - a pun the language did not intend but did not refuse.
