Where the name comes from
David is Hebrew (Dawid or Dawidh), from a root meaning "to love", and is usually read as "beloved". It is one of the oldest personal names in the Bible.
David in the Bible
David is a shepherd boy who is anointed king before he is grown, who kills a giant with a sling, who dances before the Ark of the Covenant, who writes many of the Psalms, and whose house Jesus is born into a thousand years later.
But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
