Ava is a modern given name whose roots scholars debate. Some link it to the Latin avis, "bird"; others read it as a shortened form of Germanic names beginning with av-. Popular sites also connect it to Eve, but the vowel patterns do not match cleanly. All three are possible; none is proven.
